Schools and communities on the remote island of Gigantes Sur, Municipality of Carles, Iloilo were trained in disaster preparedness and risk reduction management as part of a humanitarian aid project of the German Federal Foreign Office with Save the Children. The project amounting to 999.000 EUR (about Php 55 million) also improved access to water, sanitation and wash facilities for local residents through the provision of latrines and water hand pumps. In November 2013 Typhoon Yolanda devastated this vulnerable island community and isolated it from the mainland for weeks.
During his visit to the project area Deputy Head of Mission of the German Embassy Michael Hasper met with local government representatives, school officials and beneficiaries who expressed their gratitude for this initiative which has improved water and sanitation on the island and strengthened the community’s capacity to prepare for and respond to future calamities.
